The Competition and Festival has been a resounding success!

12th July 2011

Avril is away this week, taking a well-earned rest, and will return on saturday 16th when she will attend to your many queries. I have set up an automatic email response, but in case you did not receive this, your query will be answered by next week.
We are still receiving queries from people who wish to attend the Festival! - Steven

Avril will shortly post a detailed letter of thanks on this page, but today she is busy with our overseas visitors, Verso Duo and Greg and Dave. As soon as our visitors leave, Avril will attend to outstanding prizes and queries. May I personally thank everyone for their enthusiasm and help throughout the Festival - Steven Felmore (Vice Chairman, Friends CTAM and Webmaster)

14th June 2011

First round completed! I was thrilled with the overall standard of the competition at the first round on Saturday. Congratulations and thank you to students, parents, teachers and all who participated in making the day so enjoyable and successful. Thank you also to all those who travelled many miles by plane and taxi to be there.

There were so many wonderful performances which made the selection process difficult, but which is exciting for the future of the classical guitar in South Africa. I am encouraged by everyone’s enthusiasm, willingness to risk and be involved, which I believe are the qualities needed for sustained success of this project.

There are those who will be working a little harder than others at the start of the festival in the semi-finals, but everyone has the opportunity of getting involved with as many festival opportunities as you can.

Summary of Participants
1 There were 41 entries in the 13-19 yrs (7 were YouTube entries) and
20 in the 20+ yrs (9 were YouTube entries).
2 11 individuals and 2 groups auditioned for the Peri-Urban ACT Festival Bursary
with 7 competing in the Peri-Urban part of the competition.
3 17 are still to compete in the 12 and under category - Friday 1 July at 14h00.
With 2 categories undersubscribed and the 13-19 yrs abundantly subscribed,
it was decided to allow 28 instead of 24 in this age group to go through to the semi-finals.
PLEASE VISIT the festival program page for your specific performance times.

PLEASE NOTE: The final WINNER of the 20+ Category will also perform at the NEDERBURG CONCERT SERIES on SUNDAY at 17h00.

29th May 2011

17th May 2011

I am pleased to say we have 80 entrants for the Classical Guitar Competition! May I thank my fellow teachers, and colleagues at the universities for your enthusiasm and encouragement of your students, as well as the parents and teachers of the younger ones who entered the junior section. And I have to mention those brave seniors, who in some cases 'dusted off' their classical guitars and are hard at work practicing again.

Thank you also to the peri-urban and township arts organizations from whom we are now gathering new enthusiasts, who have been exposed to one form or another of finger-picking guitar styles, but who through the help of Act's sponsorship are eager to learn more about the classical guitar at our festival event.

I believe this festival and competition will serve to underline the importance and special nature of the classical guitar in our country. The living is in the journey and this journey is well on its way now.

21st February 2011

Great News! - We are introducing a 12 years and younger category (Junior) for the Competition. Early feedback from teachers have shown that, although the competition is open to all ages, it would be better for the younger children to have their own Junior category with their own entry requirements. A new form is being created and will be available on this site within the next few days.

7th February 2011

Today we make this website live at http://www.capetownguitarfestival.com/
This is a proud moment indeed and I would like to thank everyone who has so far contributed much time and effort towards making this a reality - especially our webmaster who has spent many hours putting up with my endless changes!

May this website lead to a successful festival and competition!
